HIDA Drone Show Initiative

The Drone Show Initiative is a groundbreaking collaboration between Arizona State University and Nova Sky Stories that explores the fusion of art, technology, and storytelling at an unprecedented scale. Launched in Fall 2023 with a 600-drone performance during the ASU vs. USC football game, the initiative has evolved into an innovative educational platform, empowering students to design for the skies. Through immersive coursework, hands-on experience, and professional mentorship, this partnership is shaping the future of experiential media and redefining what it means to create in public space.

ASU’S FIRST MAssive DRONE SHOW

EDUCATION AT NEW HEIGHTS

The Drone Show Initiative at Arizona State University (ASU) began in Fall 2023 with a groundbreaking partnership between the Herberger Institute and Nova Sky Stories (NSS)—a creative drone company founded by Kimbal Musk. Together, they brought ASU’s first-ever drone light show to life during the ASU vs. USC football halftime performance, celebrating the 50th anniversary of Elton John’s Goodbye Yellow Brick Road. Set to live music by the Sun Devil Marching Band, the drones painted vivid animations in the night sky, synchronized to the music and stadium lights, electrifying the crowd and creating an unforgettable experience for tens of thousands of spectators.

This collaboration was made possible through a generous donation from the Swette family and the visionary support of  Professor Ana Herruzo, who specializes in large-scale, interactive audiovisual environments.

Despite the tight production timeline and technical challenges—including FAA constraints, bounding box limitations, and animating within a restricted airspace—the team of student designers and engineers developed a compelling, narrative-driven performance. The success of this event not only showcased the power of creative technology but also marked the beginning of a transformative new medium at ASU: sky storytelling.

WHAT'S NEXT

Looking ahead, the Drone Show Initiative will continue expanding as an interdisciplinary research and production platform. Plans are underway for future public performances, deeper integration with ASU’s immersive media programs, and new tools to streamline student-led storytelling. The long-term vision includes open-sourcing educational content, developing new curriculum modules, and creating cross-institutional partnerships to scale sky storytelling beyond ASU.

As Nova Sky Stories continues to push the boundaries of aerial performance, ASU students—through the MEDIAted X Lab—are not only participating in this cultural shift; they are helping lead it.

What began as a singular moment of spectacle has since evolved into a pioneering educational platform. In Fall 2024, ASU launched the first university-level course on drone show design, making it one of the first institutions in the country to formally integrate this emerging medium into the curriculum. Developed in close collaboration with Nova Sky Stories and led by Professor Ana Herruzo at the Media and Immersive eXperience (MIX) Center, the course bridges immersive experience design, 3D animation, lighting choreography, and technical constraints unique to aerial performances.

Over the course of 15 weeks, students from diverse artistic and technical backgrounds explored how to tell compelling narratives through synchronized drone formations. From early storyboarding to final flight simulations, the class emphasized iterative design and real-world production workflows. Guest lectures and critiques from NSS industry professionals provided direct insight into creative and technical processes, preparing students for professional pathways in immersive and experiential design. The course exemplifies how academia and industry can come together to shape the future of public spectacle—where the sky itself becomes a canvas for storytelling.

Partnerships

Drone storytelling is a transformative, sustainable alternative to traditional fireworks—offering large-scale visual narratives without the environmental harm. As the medium grows, so does its potential: from commemorations and concerts to public art and activism, sky stories are shaping how we celebrate, remember, and connect.

The Drone Show Initiative positions ASU at the forefront of this evolution. It empowers students to become early leaders in a field that merges technical precision with creative expression. With direct mentorship from NSS, students navigate the complexity of designing for constrained airspace, animating within 600-point limitations, and previsualizing performances with advanced software tools—all while crafting stories that can be seen and felt from hundreds of feet below.
